Walnut Shell Blasting and Cleaning Material

Clean Your Boat with Walnut Grit
Walnut shell Grit
Walnut shell Gritis the hard fibrous product made from ground or crushed walnut shells. When used as a blasting media, walnut shell grit is extremely durable, angular and multi-faceted, yet is considered a 'soft abrasive'. Walnut shell blasting grit is an excellent replacement for sand (free silica) to avoid inhalation health concerns.

Industrial Minerals
"Walnut shell abrasive is used to clean and polish soft metals, fibreglass, wood, plastics and stone. Walnut shell also works as a deburring and deflashing product for mouldings, castings and electrical parts."

"Walnut Shell Abrasives were originally developed and are still used for cleaning gasoline and diesel engines. It’s toughness and lack of silicon or other grit allows it to clean metals, alloys and plastics without scratching or pitting the surface. Walnut Shell Abrasives re carefully manufactured to eliminate any possible metals or mineral contamination which could damage fine finishes."

"Composition Materials Co. Inc. has been a leading supplier of crushed Walnut Shell grit products. Composition Materials pioneered Walnut Shell Blasting with the US Navy in the 1960s. With the introduction of Walnut Shell Blasting, aircraft carriers & submarines were stripped of only their top coating, leaving the expensive undercoats intact."

Dennis Dawson Co. "Walnut Soft Abrasive Grit It is a fact that in addition to a soft grit material being strong, that is, resisting rupture, the material must also have a high modulus of elasticity, that is, it should resist deformation. The durability and quality characteristics of a walnut shell is proven by its ability to stand up and perform and is further emphasized in the following chart showing various materials and their modulus of elasticity in pounds per square inch."

Walnut Shell Cleaning Cars
Walnut Shell Intake Valve Cleaning for BMW
"Cleaning carbon build-up inside an engine can be a very costly and laborious routine. But thankfully BMW has devised special equipment to allow for intake port cleaning with the engine assembled and in the car. The procedure uses walnut shells ground to between .45 and .80mm or SAE20/30. Walnut blasting is just like sand blasting but uses walnut shells which as organic soft abrasives will not damage the intake valve, valve guide, or intake port. This same process is used to clean aircraft engines, delicate electrical circuit boards, and has been around since the late 1800's.
